New product launch generic or branded?
I am a new seller and I am buying from China through Alibaba. I wish to brand the product with custom packaging and my suppliers min order for this is 1000 units. I thought it best to test the market by ordering 250 generic units before committing to the large order. My question is supposing the generics sell, would I then be able to update the generic product to a brand approved product or would I need to launch an entirely new product? And if so is this a sensible approach or should I just commit to the 1000 launch?

You cannot just change a generic listing to a brand listing. I believe you will need to create a whole new catalogue differentiating SKU'S. Be careful with Alibaba, they are notoriously known to be an invalid supplier of goods when Amazon asks for invoices.

Did you look at how many other people are already selling that item? Did you notice that at least one of the sellers is the company that manufacturers the part and is at a price you can't compete with? Did you read the posts about how some chinese companies will attack your listing once its up and get it shut down? Often in a way that leaves you with no money and no product to sell.

You cannot change a generic listing to a branded one.
Nobody can tell you if you should commit to 1000 units.
You have to do your own homework. Research the demand for the product. Create branded content. Acquire barcodes. Etc. etc.
Also depends on your risk tolerance. Do you have $$ to invest that you can afford to lose.
Even with the best research, it is impossible to know if a product will be successful just like it is impossible to know for sure how the stock market will perform in the future.

Hi @Seller_qn6WLJ3Ey4rdW,
Your fellow sellers have a lot of experience here and have provided you with some great information. As others have suggested, you should start by learning in Seller University and you may find the New Seller Community Forums helpful. Please know that Seller Support is always there to assist you as well.
Regarding changing a generic item to branded is not possible. You can find that policy in the Product Detail Page Rules.
If you choose to re-brand a product, please refer to Amazon Brand Name Policy page for minor Brand name changes. Any major Brand Name change requests are considered re-branding and will not be supported. To protect Customer trust and ensure catalog quality, we ask that you create a new ASIN for the new product.
If you are going to brand a product, I would advise that you work directly with a manufacturer as Amazon will not accept invoices from Alibaba if your listing has issues and it's a policy violation to brand a generic item as a brand that it is not.
I hope this information is helpful!
