New Type of Scam? - Major Confusion!

On December 26th, 2024 a buyer opened a return request for an expensive item and mentioned they would not be able to return the item for about a month (no problem, returns are extended during the holiday season anyway).

On January 22nd I recieved an email from the buyer stating they put the package in the mail back to us, but did not use the prepaid return label they were sent automatically when they opened the return. Rather they said they "found another label in the box and thought that was the return label" (what? we don't put extra labels in our boxes) - they said it was a label back to "our supplier" in El Paso, Texas. (we have no suppliers in El Paso)

At this point I'm thoroughly confused and state I'll look further into the issue, they respond with a USPS tracking number that shows something was shipped from El Paso to our zip code and delivered.

Here's the kicker, the tracking number they provided us shows a delivery date to our zip code on December 23rd, 2024 - they did not recieved their order from us until December 26th, 2024.

I know I'm not going crazy, none of this is even close to pluasible and I'm worried this person is going to try and damage my reputation with a negative review.

They did not use the prepaid return label so I'm not worried about a chargeback or A - Z claim!

Has anyone else dealt with something like this? My spidey-senses are tingling!
