Why are removal order fees so expensive nowadays
This is kind of just a rant, but I mean, come on amazon, I get that shipping costs have gone up, but removal/disposal fees have just absolutely skyrocketed.
Pretty sure I'm paying about 5 times more than even just a few years ago.
If we need to remove a bunch of inventory (like 200 units) due to a labeling error or an unforeseen circumstance, it really ticks me off that I need to pay literally $1000 for that to happen (standard size unit weighing 3.5 lbs, $5 each to remove). One instance for a bulkier standard size product, I think we were looking at an $8000 removal cost. Super stressful when 1 simple packaging error can end up costing this much. Maybe if amazon could provide some actual rudimentary assistance after receipt (like relabeling a mislabeled product for example for a fee, or doing a proper bin check for which we'd gladly pay a fee as well, if done properly), then this would reduce some anxiety, but no, support is a complete disaster and they can't understand basic english.
It's like ok, I get that those units are coming from different fulfillment centers, so why doesn't amazon charge their ACTUAL cost of removal plus a percentage on top of that to cover handling. Amazon is definitely making a profit on this. I know that because, even with our own standard shipping rates, if I sent out units 1 by one, I'd just about be paying that rate. Amazon is grouping large amounts of these items together AND using their probably awesome shipping rate discounts as well. They once sent a standard pallet via freight back to us which cost us roughly 1k and them? Probably $150 max.
In addition to this, if we want to dispose of anything, you're telling me it costs the exact same to ship it out? Now that's just crazy. Amazon must make an obscene amount of profit on these disposals.
Why have removals/disposals become THIS much of a profit center for Amazon? It reminds me of the household moving business. Once they have all your stuff in their possession, they can jack up the price on you and you can't do anything about it.

TLDR...but your inventory is spread across Amazon's vast network. A removal order doesn't just happen in one FC, If it were, they could chuck multiples in one shipping box and save a ton of money. But that's not their system.

Can you self-fulfill?? It sounds like it would cheaper in the long run.

Yes, I agree that it's hard to believe that the shipping costs have increased at the same rate as the fees, especially when they're often able to ship dozens (or even hundreds) of units from a single fulfillment center.
We sell many small items and we agree that it would be nice if we could just pay Amazon to re-label "mislabeled" units rather than having to spend many hundreds (or thousands) of dollars shipping the same items back and forth to Amazon. It'd be more cost effective, time efficient (can take months to get removals, re-label, re-ship, re-process at the fulfillment centers), and it would also be a lot better for the environment.
Lastly, this makes me think of something else. The Amazon bots recently 'accidentally' marked a lot of our Toy products as Expired. Amazon ultimately realized their error and removed the "expired" tag on these products, but not before returning a large number of these items to our business. I imagine they charged us a significant amount of money to do so (as you mentioned in your post), and your post has helped me realize that I need to contact Amazon to see about getting reimbursed for all of these "Expired" toys sent back to us.

I find it crazy frustrating we can't get Amazon to relabel items or change the condition, once they're at FBA.
It's insane to have to pay all that to have the items returned, relabel /relist, then ship them back to FBA?!
This seems like petty thievery from Amazon. We should be able to change our FNSKU's condition easily.

I remember when it used to be free, glory days. In my Bruce Springsteen voice.

it is almost likely they don’t want you selling fba
