The "Delivered" but A to Z "never received" SCAM

After getting hit with dozens of "delivered" but "never received" A to Z claims in favor of the customer I started to notice a pattern as the claims were rampant within the last 3 months. First piece of the puzzle was that all of the listings that were hit with this SCAM in particular all involved our cologne and aftershave items, particularly those sold in 3 bottle bundles. Purchases were always made by consumers that had never before purchased from us, and the orders were always shipping to a name other than the name of the person who made the purchase. The other pattern that quickly emerged, was unfortunately one that came too late as it was just as we were being hit with the A to Z claim. All messages from these bogus buyers were either identical or very similar, especially this message in particular:

what's wrong with my order? i checked everywhere it may have been delivered, but the result is nothing I found out. i don't want to wait anymore, Please refund. i will appreciate your service here!

The messages were all EXACTLY like this, with punctuation and grammatical issues, so it was hard to miss. However, I still couldn't figure out how the SCAM was working and unfortunately, I was not getting any help from Amazon Seller Central Support. After, hours and hours of frustration with Amazon associates who offered no help other than lip service and faked sympathy for how frustrating this must be, I started doing so of my own investigating. I was able to find many of the recipients' phone numbers through google and decided to give them a call about these orders. I contacted several of these recipients and let them know that I was calling them regarding their "missing package" of cologne/aftershave.

Much to my shock, each and every one of them emphatically denied making a claim that they never received the package and said they HAD indeed RECEIVED their package, and early or on time. More importantly, they all stated that they either did NOT even have Amazon accounts or that they had not purchased their cologne/aftershave on Amazon but elsewhere, such as Walmart.com.

So there you have it. In a nutshell, the SCAM buyer lists a popular Amazon item on Walmart, eBay, or some other online platform at a lower price than offered on Amazon to steal the business from Amazon. SCAM buyer creates these listings on other platforms although they do not have any inventory to sell. Innocent buyer shops on Walmart, eBay, etc as the scammer is offering the items at a lower price than on Amazon by the real vendor. Innocent buyer places their order on platform X, scammer takes that order from their bogus listing and purchases the items from us on Amazon. Amazon scammer has us ship the order directly to the honest customer who receives their platform X order as expected but fulfilled by an Amazon vendor. Scam buyer makes fake A to Z claiming they never got their order. They collect their money from their sale of our package, Amazon refunds the scammer their money from us and another organized crime scam has been revealed on Amazon.

Now we are left cancelling all orders of cologne and aftershave to first time buyers that meet this scammer criteria as we can no longer take the financial losses. Clearly Amazon is either oblivious or just doesn't care as I have spent countless hours and days since October telling them about this and here we are in January with it still going on. If I can dig through this and figure it out, why can't Amazon figure it out? Who is protecting vendors? As a vendor, I can't even sell with confidence anymore unless its a repeat customer with no previous issues. Shameful SCAmazon.

Everything you stated boils down to one thing. Where did you purchase your chipping. Thru Amazon, or on your own.

Since the buyer always pays for shipping, it makes sense to buy shipping thru the Amazon site. That way, as a seller, you have a better chance of not paying for INR claims.

It's common knowledge that Amazon has trained buyers to scam sellers the site. When you view documentaries on the history pf Amazon, Jeff Bezos always says Amazon will take anything back, we just want to please the buyer. And what makes it even better for Amazon, is that 60% of the sales come from 3rd Party Sellers and costs Amazon nothing.

I've noticed this scam as well.

I buy all of my shipping through Amazon and any buyer that claims non-receipt, I direct them to the a-to-z claims process. I would guesstimate 85% of the buyers never file a claim which leads me to believe something fishy is going on there. The ones that do file a-to-z claims, at least they are on record so if a pattern emerges, Amazon will be able to identify it.

Amazon only wants to please the buyers, and the buyers include scammers. Sometimes it's really frustrating, I rarely use FBM because that leads to a lot of scams and have to use expensive FBA services.

That's exactly what has happened to us! Mostly on the $100 bottles of perfume. One that we got a signature for (an almost $200 order) claimed "he" didn't receive the item. We got proof of delivery from USPS and showed him the actual recipient signed for the package. He of course filed an A-Z and Amazon granted it! They were so generous in not affecting our metrics (sarcasm). Now we have to waste more time defending this ridiculous claim and we still may be out $200. What are we even in business for?! The theft has skyrocketed!

As others have said just buy your shipping through Amazon. I get hit with the same scam but you're protected if you use Amazon shipping.

No need to cancel them, just use Amazon Buy shipping and be sure to get the first scan on time and not just a scan sheet.

I could see this going up like crazy with the whole TikTok store trend becoming more popular. Amazon has zero accountability and why would the employees even care especially if they're just outsourced and being paid pennies. Maybe if Amazon gets hit with enough A-to-Z coverage claims they'll have to make a difference, but the reality is eventually they'll just get rid of the "INR coverage if shipping brought through Amazon" and we'll just have to foot the bill even more.

Just use Amazon's "Buy Shipping" and you'll be 100% covered. Just tell the customer this: "Good news is I used Amazon's shipping service to ship your order so we are both protected from lost or stolen packages. To get a refund from Amazon, please open up an Item Not Received case." In My experience this is all I've had to do. Amazon takes care of the rest. I don't have to request a reimbursement or deal with customer service reps.

Probably not a good idea to post that you flagrantly violated Amazon TOS by contacting buyers in the manner that you did.

Yeah, Amazon is ridiculous and enables numerous scams. Amazon doesn't care even a little bit about sellers, they only care about buyers. If they can screw the seller to make a buyer happy, they will and it is a win-win for them. No money out of their pocket and a happy customer for Amazon. All that to say: don't expect Amazon to help with any of this, as they have zero interest in protecting sellers.

Buy your shipping on Amazon, ship on time, and you are protected against INR claims. End of story.
